Vitreoretinal Fellowship (18 months)

Biratnagar Eye Hospital (BEH)

Your Profile:

  • MS or MD (ophthalmology) or DNB
  • Age < 35 years
  • Strong interest in vitreoretinal subspecialty of ophthalmology
  • Ability to be self-critical and willing to learn
  • Ability to integrate in a highly motivated team
  • Good teaching skills
  • Good surgical hands, preferably experience in anterior segment surgery including SICS / phacoemulsification
  • Basic computer skills (E-mail, Internet, Powerpoint, Word)
  • Language requirements: Fluent in English and Nepali or Hindi

Outpatient Work:

BEH has a busy OPD with high daily patient numbers.

Within the first six months of your fellowship we expect you to be familiar with:

  • Examination of vitreoretinal patients with direct / indirect ophthalmoscope
  • Management strategies in various vitreoretinal disorders
  • Slit lamp biomicroscopy including fundus examination with 90/78 D and 3-mirror contact lens
  • Fundus drawing
  • Ultrasound B-Scan
  • Fluorescein angiography
  • Fundus photography
  • Laser therapy in retinal diseases
  • Pre- and postoperative management of the patients including counselling

We request you to bring and use your own lenses (20 and 78/90 D).

Teaching and Continuous Medical Education:

Sagarmatha Choudhary Eye Hospital, Lahan and its branch BEH  are teaching institutions for ophthalmologists, ophthalmic residents, ophthalmic assistants and eye workers. You will actively participate in all our teaching and CME programs. This will include preparation of papers, lectures, research work, case presentations etc.

Surgery:

Initially the fellow will spend time in assisting surgeries and in familiarising with all instruments and machines that we use at BEH.

Surgical training progresses with simple retinal detachment repairs / vitrectomies. Once this technique is mastered without direct assistance of the VR Consultant, more complicated surgical techeniques including use of intraocular gases, PFCL and silicone oil is taught stepwise. Outcome of surgeries is evaluated and has to be documented by the surgeon.

After six months of surgical training we expect you to be able to perform uncomplicated vitreoretinal procedures independently.

Accommodation:

Accommodation is provided free of cost . Cost for electricity and telephone have to be paid by the fellow.

Salary:

Salary starts with 57,770 NRs (36,106 IRs) gross salary per month in the 1st year and will be increased to70,445 NRs (44,028 IRs) in the 2nd year.
